The Reclusive Pilgrim

This a blog of my thoughts on politics, religion, philosophy. I am a reclusive pilgrim searching for the meaning of life and the higher power of goodness, in this world . My desire is to share my thoughts of what I have discovered through experience.

Why we ask why.

Why do we ask why? Why do things work the way that they do? Why does the sun move around the sky? Why does the moon come out only at night? Why do we have to go to school? Why do we have to stop at a  red light? For every question that begins with why there's an answer. So why do we ask why? Perhaps it's our desire to know, to understand the reason as to why things happens, or the reason as to why we do things the way that we do things a certain way. Perhaps in knowing the reasoning behind the why we we then have order in our lives. Is is plausible the we need, we desire in our lives? Do we not create order in our lives? Do we not create structure in our lives? We have computers, smart-phones, that we use to keep track of our contacts and appointments. Do we not then have a form of order and structure in our lives? Another example is the fact that we have computers filled with data that is then transformed into information, that is then placed in a structure that we call a database. We collect data, sort, and organize it. Why? Because we like to know, to understand why others are doing the things that they are doing. We like to ask the question why. Why do consumers spend the way they do? We like to know such answers so that someone some where can make money by catering to consumer tastes and desires. We then have taken  our answer from why, and made it into something that a person can then take action in relation to our answer of why. Why becomes the goal of scientists as they seek the answers as to why something does what it does. Thus why becomes the principle question that we ask when  we don't understand something. The question why or how are interrelated in that they ask the same question just a little differently. Why then becomes a general question, that is in contrast to the how. When we ask how then we are asking for the specifics as to how something works. We might ask why does a computer work, or we might ask how does a computer work. Whats the difference? By asking why does a computer work  we could answer because it was made to work. Thus a general question met with a general answer. But a specific question, how does a computer work? Is answered with a very specific, and long and answer explaining the processes as to how a computer works. Therefore we have moved beyond why and now ask how. It is in answering how that our understanding and knowledge of something increases. We can see that there's a logical progression of human learning from the why to how do things work.

A Right to Self Determination.

Don't we as intelligent beings have a right to self determination? Can we not determine for ourselves what we think is best for our selves? By saying we have the right to self determination we are saying that we have the right to determine what we ought to do and not do. The right of self determination is part of our right to be free to choose how we want to live our lives as free persons. For the state to declare a mandate, forcing a person to do something that they might not other wise do  would mean that the state has forcibly taken away our right of self determination. The state by forcing us to act under the guise of law is forcing us into slavery. This by the very entity that was meant to protect our freedom and not take it away.

The idea of the right to self determination can be further clarified if we looked at the idea that all persons are free, and are born free. But let me clarify some terms first. Whether we say Free man or Free persons we are referring to the same thing that the individual is free. So what does it mean to be free? To be free means to have no boundaries on ones thoughts or actions, including choice. We might choose something however we see fit. We might decide as a society that we need to limit  a persons freedom in order to preserve order in society, But here too a person has choice, join the order and freedom by living according to the laws of society, or risk one's life, and live amid the chaos the a person might experience if they lived outside society norms. Now let us consider freedom of action. If we say that we have a right to act in a way that we determine best for ourselves then we have freedom of action. We have the right to freedom of action so long as it does no harm to anyone or to any private property. Public property on the other hand must be recognized that it is property held in trust for the general and public use of all in the community to use. Vandalism would to public property would be considered as harm/damage against common property. A question arises can government regulate use of public property? I must argue no since it is held in trust for the public. It is the public that has a right to use it as it sees fit. If a person were to be arrested for reading the bible aloud and in public then the government might be considered in violation of a persons right to freedom, and that might be considered a form of enslavement. Under those circumstances the governments actions, or those of it's agents might be considered immoral since they do harm to the public good and violate the public trust. But if a person were disturbing the peace and causing harm or damage to public property then the government and or her agents can step in to restore order and peace since that would be moral.

In society we impose boundaries on freedom in  the form of moral code. Though we are still free, we are free to choose how we want to live our lives. Within limits or without? If we say that we want to live our lives according to a moral code the we make choice out of free will. Therefore we might exercise our right to self determination through our freedom to choose.

We are, therefore we can do so.

Is enslavement in any form immoral?
We might argue that enslavement in any form takes away from our freedom. Enslavement takes away our right to self determination whether is individual right or corporation's right. Can a church or an organization that is run by a church be enslaved by a ruler or government to do the governments will? If we enslave a church and or any organization affiliated with the church are we not then denying the right to worship however we see fit since an affiliated organization is run according to the moral principles of that religious body? Thus is it not then immoral to enslave an organization that is run according higher standards, and principle's high than that of governments? It is.
